Newnans Lake is located in Alachua County, Florida, about 2 miles east of Gainesville. The lake is home to many forms of wildlife and has been designated as a protected site by the county.

To the north of the lake sits The Newnan's Lake Conservation Area which provides recreation to lake goers. There are multiple trails for biking, horseback riding, hiking, and walking within the conservation area. One of the most popular activities around the lake and in the conservation area is wildlife viewing. Common wildlife sightings include white-tailed deer, fox, otter, a variety of snakes, bald eagles, osprey, wild turkeys, and several varieties of songbirds, warblers, wading birds and shore birds. The area is also a significant bald eagle nesting site, as well.

Other activities that can be enjoyed on the lake or in the conservation area include fishing, camping, seasonal hunting, boating, and picnicking.
